Monkey the PILSNER
Kid Mohai 61%, Nylon 30%, Wool 9% Machine Knitting and Hand Brushing
-
I went to a business trip to Niigata. Upon arrival, I went to a local izakaya alone, and on the wall,
there was a beautiful painting of a monkey along with a poster of a beer with a label. The poster
turned out to be from Hakkaisan, a famous sake brewery in Niigata that also produces beer. The
next day, I was taken to dinner by my client in Niigata, a distributor in Niigata, and when I
mentioned the beer poster, they said they knew the person in charge and introduced me.
I learned that the monkey illustration was drawn by the artist Ryuma Imai, and the beer is
brewed at the place called Saru Kura Yama (Saru means monkey in Japananese) where monkeys
inhabit the mountains. After various conversations, a collaboration was realized.
Initially, I had planed placing the monken on the front, but I decided the use blur and blended
colour on front and featuring a beautiful monkey and the PILSNER logo on the back.
Imai-san and Hakkaisan, thank you very much for making this collaboration happen.
